| Obverse description | Central device depicts the royal arms of Portugal — the crowned escutcheon bearing the quinas — surmounted by a crown, with the mint letter 'L' for Lisboa positioned below the shield. The Gothic monogram 'IhnS' (for Ioannes, i.e. João I) appears integrated with the crowned shield design. Secret symbols, when present, appear to the left or right of the crown depending on the die variety. The surrounding field carries a Latin legend with multiple known lettering variations. The entire design is characteristic of late medieval Portuguese hammered coinage, with the irregular flan and weak areas typical of the period. |

| Reverse description | The reverse bears a Latin legend arranged around the field in the Gothic style typical of Joannine billon coinage. The inscription REPARATIO REX PVBLICE is distributed around the coin, referencing the public restoration or reform associated with João I's monetary policy. The field may display a cross or other central device consistent with Portuguese half-real cruzado types of this period. Die alignment and strike quality are variable due to the hand-hammered production method. |
