Reverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the Portuguese royal shield — displaying five escutcheons arranged in a cross pattern, each charged with five bezants — is set within a quadrilobe or lobate frame. A small mint mark letter 'C' appears below the shield. The circular peripheral legend in Gothic Latin letters, separated by decorative rosette or cross stops, runs between the inner beaded circle and the outer beaded border, identifying the issuer as King Fernando of Portugal.
