Guatemala's shift to copper-nickel for small coinage in this period followed the collapse of the quetzal's silver backing during the chronic fiscal instability of the Reyna Barrios and early Estrada Cabrera governments. The 1/2 real in this alloy had a short run — production ceased after 1901 — making the two-year window the entirety of the type's existence.
