Obverse description Central design features a radiant sunburst composed of fine rays emanating from a six-petalled floral rosette at the centre, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The sunburst is flanked at the lower portion by two curved laurel branches meeting at the base, forming a wreath-like arrangement. The circular legend EST • D • COSTA-R • (Estado de Costa Rica) runs along the upper periphery in Latin characters. The entire design is contained within a beaded border. Note: the example illustrated bears a small suspension hole above the centre.
