| Obverse description | Central field features the large Arabic fraction numeral ½ enclosed within a beaded rope circle. The Arabic legend الجمهورية السورية (Republic of Syria) curves around the upper portion of the coin, while the denomination نصف قرش (Half Piastre) appears along the lower field. The date ١٩٣٥ (1935) is inscribed at the bottom, accompanied by the word ESSAI denoting trial strike status. Stylised foliate sprigs flank the central circle at left and right, and the entire design is framed by a beaded border. |

| Additional information |
Syria's 1935 coinage program was administered under the French Mandate, with the Banque de Syrie et du Liban controlling currency issuance. This essai — a trial strike produced for official examination before production authorization — was never approved for circulation. The nickel brass composition itself may have been a point of contention; the circulating coinage of the period favored different alloys, and the essai series for this year shows multiple competing specifications tested simultaneously.
