Additional information

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which this coin commemorates, opened in 1902 — making 2002 its centennial year and the direct occasion for this issue. The building on Tahrir Square was designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, selected through an international competition in 1895, and remains the largest repository of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the world, housing over 120,000 objects including the Tutankhamun treasures recovered by Howard Carter in 1922.
