Aversbeschreibung A displayed eagle with spread wings occupies the central field, rendered in the bold, stylized manner characteristic of medieval Sicilian hammered coinage. The eagle stands atop a decorative foliate or rocky base, its head turned to the right. The entire device is set within a multi-lobed or trefoil decorative frame composed of curved segments and small pellets, all enclosed by a beaded outer border. No legible inscription is visible on this face, the design relying entirely on the heraldic eagle motif associated with the Aragonese rulers of Sicily.

Reversbeschreibung The reverse displays the crowned arms of Aragon — a vertically striped shield of multiple pale lines surmounted by a small crown at the chief — set within a prominent multi-lobed decorative frame mirroring that of the obverse, with curved segments and small pellets arranged around the perimeter. A beaded border runs along the outer edge of the flan. The bold, deeply struck heraldic shield is the dominant device, reflecting the Aragonese dynastic identity of Juan II as ruler of Sicily, with no clearly legible legend present.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Juan II ruled Sicily nominally through his son Ferrante, who had seized the Neapolitan throne in 1458 following Alfonso V's death — a succession immediately contested by René of Anjou and his French-backed claimants. The half pierreale was a fractional silver denomination inherited from the earlier Aragonese monetary system in Sicily, the pierreale itself tracing back to the reforms of Peter III in the thirteenth century. Juan's name appears on Sicilian coinage largely as an assertion of dynastic legitimacy during two decades of continuous dynastic turbulence on the Italian peninsula.
