| Reverse description | The reverse presents a large, elegantly engraved cartouche with baroque acanthus and scrollwork ornamentation filling the field, within which the three-line Latin motto AVARVS NON IMPLEBITVR (The miser will not be satisfied), a quotation from Ecclesiastes 5:9, is boldly inscribed in raised Roman capitals. The cartouche is framed by symmetrical foliate volutes and decorative flourishes extending to the milled border, with additional ornamental motifs at the top and bottom of the design. The plain, text-focused composition conveys a moral and religious message consistent with the reforming pontificate of Innocent XI, who was known for his austerity. The entire design is rendered in crisp, high-relief milled technique characteristic of late seventeenth-century papal coinage from the Rome Mint. |
