| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the papal coat of arms of Innocent XI (Benedetto Odescalchi), featuring a quartered shield with an eagle displayed in the upper half and a lion passant above a barry field of goblets in the lower half, all within an elaborate Baroque cartouche with scrolling acanthus foliage. The shield is surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, the universal symbol of pontifical authority. The circular legend reads INNOCEN٠XI٠PONT٠M٠A٠VII٠, identifying the pontiff as Innocent XI, Supreme Pontiff, in his seventh regnal year. The coin exhibits fine milled edge reeding and displays the confident high-relief die work characteristic of the Rome Mint under late seventeenth-century papal coinage. |
