Annibale Albani served as Cardinal Camerlengo during the 1724 sede vacante following the death of Innocent XIII, giving him the authority to issue coinage in the interregnum period before a new pope was elected. The vacancy lasted only about a month — Benedetto Odescalchi's conclave moved with unusual speed, electing Pietro Francesco Orsini as Benedict XIII in late May. Coins struck under Albani's brief administrative authority are consequently scarce, produced in limited quantities to cover the institutional need for authorized currency during the gap.
