Charles Philip of Greiffenklau-Vollraths served as Prince-Bishop of Würzburg from 1749 until his death in 1754 — one of the shorter episcopates of the eighteenth century. His reign fell in the shadow of his celebrated predecessor Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, under whom the Würzburg Residenz had been constructed, and the diocese he inherited was still financially strained from that building program. Small copper fractional issues like this half-Pfennig were among the most practical coinages his brief administration produced, intended for local market circulation in a region where petty commerce demanded low-denomination specie.
