Duarte, the intellectual father of Dominican independence, spent much of his life in exile — expelled by the very republic he helped found, dying in Caracas in 1876 after decades of political marginalization. Placing his likeness on the half peso a century later was as much an act of official rehabilitation as it was commemoration.
The 1976 issue falls within a period of late Trujillo-era institutional inertia at the Banco Central, when coin designs changed slowly and series ran long. KM#44 continued with minimal modification for years, making date-specific attribution the only reliable way to distinguish issues within the type.
