The Intendencia de Santo Domingo issued this fractional note during one of the strangest administrative chapters in Caribbean history: the Spanish Annexation period, when the Dominican Republic voluntarily reincorporated itself into the Spanish Empire between 1861 and 1865. The experiment collapsed under guerrilla resistance, epidemic disease that devastated Spanish garrison troops, and Madrid's ultimate decision that the territory was more trouble than it was worth.
The Peso Fuerte designation — "strong peso" — distinguished these notes from the depreciated Dominican paper that preceded annexation. Whether the currency actually commanded more confidence is doubtful given how quickly the entire administrative apparatus unraveled.
