W.J. Taylor was a London diesinker who produced a substantial portion of Australia's early colonial trade tokens, operating from Birmingham-area connections while supplying merchants who desperately needed small change during the gold rush years. Victoria's official coinage supply collapsed under the pressure of the 1851 rushes — the population of the colony multiplied in months, not years, and the British Mint could not respond fast enough. Private traders filled the gap, and Taylor's tokens circulated with near-universal acceptance in Melbourne's chaotic commercial district.
Taylor tokens are sometimes criticized for being struck to a consistent metropolitan standard rather than tailored to colonial conditions — a London product sold into a frontier economy.
