Obverse description Left-facing effigy of Queen Victoria in her second, so-called 'Bun Head' portrait, the hair drawn up and bound with a wreath of laurel, tied at the nape with a ribbon, the bust truncated at the shoulder. The engraver's initials 'L.C.W.' appear on the truncation on certain varieties. The legend VICTORIA D:G: BRITT:REG:F:D: runs continuously around the periphery within a toothed border (or beaded border on early 1860 issues), with the portrait dominating the central field. The design is executed in high relief with fine hair and drapery detail characteristic of Wyon's workmanship.
