| Obverse description | The obverse is entirely typographic, bearing no effigy or central device. The merchant's trade legend is arranged in three lines across the field: 'T. W. THOMAS' arching along the upper periphery, '& C°' to the right, 'GROCERS' prominently across the center, and 'MELBOURNE' curving along the lower periphery. The legend is separated by small ornamental stops, and the whole is surrounded by a finely milled border of uniform dentils. |
