Belleville was a small Upper Canadian town, which makes this token's "Lower Canada" attribution worth scrutiny — the Duseaman pieces circulate in a gray zone of colonial merchant currency where geographic assignment reflects trade networks rather than strict political boundaries. Thomas Duseaman issued this as a tradesman's token during the chronic small-change shortage that plagued both Canadas through the 1830s and early 1840s, a shortage so acute that butchers, tavern keepers, and merchants effectively became private mints by necessity. Breton 670 is among the more elusive of the documented butcher tokens.
