This is a trade token, not a regal issue — struck during the great copper token proliferation of the 1790s, when chronic small-change shortages across Britain forced merchants, manufacturers, and pub landlords to commission their own coinage. The "Sir Bevois" reference points to the Southampton inn of that name, invoking the medieval legend of Bevis of Hampton, a chivalric hero whose story was among the most widely circulated romances in late medieval England. The North Wales attribution in the series designation reflects Atkins's cataloguing groupings rather than a place of issue.
