| Reverse description | Hygeia, the ancient Greek goddess of health, is depicted seated and facing right between two decorative pedestals, her right foot resting upon a low stool. The left pedestal is surmounted by an orb, while the right pedestal is surmounted by a flame; a serpent coils upward around the right pedestal and drinks from a cup held in Hygeia's left hand, a classical iconographic reference to healing. The maker's initials J.M. appear on the base at lower right on certain varieties. The date 1857 is incorporated into the reverse legend HOLLOWAY'S PILLS AND OINTMENT, which encircles the composition. |
