Perkins & Co. was a Dunedin softgoods and drapery merchant operating during the acute small-change shortage that plagued Otago in the early 1860s following the Otago gold rush. The colonial government had no practical mechanism for supplying sufficient regal copper to the provincial population, leaving merchants to fill the gap with privately issued tokens — effectively self-financing a local monetary infrastructure. Andrews 436 is among the more straightforwardly attributed of the New Zealand merchant series, with die provenance traced to Birmingham trade token producers supplying the Australasian market.
