Encircling the central device is a ring of thirteen five-pointed stars arranged in a circular constellation, representing the original thirteen American colonies. The peripheral legend NOVA CONSTELLATIO appears around the upper portion of the design, referencing the symbolic 'New Constellation' of the nascent United States. The overall design reflects the idealistic republican iconography prevalent in American coinage of the post-Revolutionary period.
