The circular legend reads WE • NE'ER • SHALL • LOOK • UPON • HIS • LIKE • AGAIN, a quotation from Shakespeare's Hamlet serving as a memorial tribute. The engraver's signature C JAMES F appears in the lower field beneath the truncation. The portrait is well-modelled in the neoclassical style characteristic of late 18th-century English token engraving. A toothed border runs around the entire periphery. |
