| Obverse description | Draped bust of David Garrick, the celebrated 18th-century actor and theatre manager, facing right, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail including period-appropriate powdered wig tied with a ribbon at the nape. The circular legend reads WE • NE'ER • SHALL • LOOK • UPON • HIS • LIKE • AGAIN, a quotation from Shakespeare's Hamlet serving as a memorial tribute. The engraver's signature C JAMES F appears in the lower field beneath the truncation. The portrait is well-modelled in the neoclassical style characteristic of late 18th-century English token engraving. A toothed border runs around the entire periphery. |
