| Reverse description | The reverse field is entirely occupied by a five-line text inscription in large bold capital letters arranged across the face of the token, with no pictorial elements. The legend reads: ACQUITTED / BY HIS JURY / COUNSEL / HON. T. ERSKINE / V. GIBBS ESQR., commemorating Tooke's acquittal at the 1794 treason trial and naming his defence counsel Thomas Erskine and Vicary Gibbs. A fine milled border runs around the periphery of the reverse. The purely typographic design reflects the propagandistic, celebratory character of this issue within the Middlesex Political and Social series of Conder tokens. |
