Lipman Levy operated a general store on Lambton Quay in Wellington during the 1860s, a period when the colonial government's chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage forced merchants throughout New Zealand to issue their own copper tokens. These tradesman's tokens circulated by mutual consent rather than legal authority, accepted as a practical substitute in a cash-starved economy still heavily dependent on barter in rural districts.
The Andrews and Renniks reference numbers place this squarely within the documented New Zealand merchant token series. Surviving examples tend to appear in mid-circulated grades — these were working coins in a working town.
