Kirkcaldie & Stains issued this token during the chronic small-change shortage that plagued New Zealand's colonial economy in the 1870s, when the nearest Royal Mint branch was in Sydney and official copper simply wasn't reaching retail trade in sufficient quantity. The Wellington department store — founded in 1863 and eventually the oldest in New Zealand — had practical reasons to mint its own fractional currency: tokens kept transactions moving and customers returning to redeem them in-house.
The Andrews and Rodway references both catalogue this as #312, a concordance that reflects how thoroughly New Zealand trade token scholarship has been cross-indexed since the early collecting literature.
