| Obverse description | Facing bust of King John I rendered in a crude, stylized manner characteristic of early Anglo-Norman Irish hammered coinage, set within a prominent equilateral triangle formed by raised lines. The king's face is depicted with schematic features including pelleted eyes and a simple nose, flanked by crescents or curls representing the hair. Pellets appear in the angles of the triangle and in the surrounding field. The royal legend IOhANNЄS RЄX runs around the periphery in Latin characters within a beaded border. |
