John Alexander Barry was a Halifax merchant who issued this token privately to address a chronic shortage of small change in Nova Scotia — a problem the colonial government repeatedly failed to solve. British regal copper rarely reached the colony in sufficient quantity, and what did arrive was quickly hoarded or exported. Barry's token filled a transactional gap that official channels left open for decades.
The Breton 891 attribution places it within a well-documented series of Nova Scotia merchant tokens, though Barry's issue remains one of the more individualistic — struck under private commission rather than through any cooperative merchant arrangement.
