Hide & De Carle operated as watchmakers and jewellers on Collins Street, Melbourne, and issued this token during the acute small-change famine that plagued the Australian colonies in the 1850s. The goldrush had flooded Victoria with new arrivals and spending activity, but official coinage from Britain arrived slowly and in insufficient quantities. Merchants took matters into their own hands, commissioning copper tokens from English diesinkers — primarily the Birmingham trade — to keep daily commerce moving.
