| Obverse description | Draped bust of a figure facing right, rendered in the style of a papal portrait, occupying the central field. A circular Latin legend runs around the periphery, reading GREGORY · III · PON · G.D. The portrait displays loose, flowing hair and drapery at the shoulder, evoking the style used on contemporary regal halfpenny coinage. The initials G.D appear below or adjacent to the bust truncation. This obverse design is a deliberate evasion of the regal George III halfpenny, substituting the king's name and titles with those of Pope Gregory III to circumvent counterfeiting statutes. |
