Reverse description A detailed architectural view of the portal entrance to the Sapperton Canal Tunnel, the longest canal tunnel in England at the time of issue, rendered in a precise engraved style. The masonry facade is depicted in full face with a prominent voussoir arch at the canal waterline flanked by two arched niches and two circular oculi set into the dressed stonework. Pilasters articulate the corners of the structure, and a pedimented roofline with trees visible beyond surmounts the composition. The surrounding landscape, including rocky ground and vegetation at the lower margins, frames the architectural subject within the plain field.
