The date of issue appears in the lower exergue, and the engraver's initials 'HP' are visible in the lower right field. A continuous toothed border frames the entire design. |

The removal of "IND:IMP" — Indiae Imperator, Emperor of India — from the royal titles followed Indian independence in August 1947 and the subsequent lapse of the imperial title on January 1, 1948. New dies had to be prepared across the entire British coinage, and the modified halfpenny entered circulation in 1949. George VI himself was reportedly uncomfortable with the truncation of his titles, though the political reality left no alternative.
These four years represent the complete run of the modified type under George VI, who died in February 1952.
