Obverse description Bare-headed left-facing effigy of King George VI, modelled by T. H. Paget, whose engraver's initials 'HP' appear below the truncation of the neck. The king is depicted with neatly combed hair and a plain, unadorned bust. The surrounding legend reads GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX FIDEI DEF., separated by raised dots, and notably absent is the IND:IMP title, reflecting the granting of Indian independence in 1947. The coin is struck within a toothed border that runs continuously around the rim.

Reverse description Central device depicts a three-masted Tudor sailing ship rendered in fine detail, shown in full sail upon stylised waves, a design traditionally associated with the Golden Hind and first introduced on the halfpenny by engraver W. H. J. Blakemore. The denomination legend HALF PENNY arcs across the upper field in two words on either side of the mainmast, with small dashes flanking the date at the base. The date of issue appears in the lower exergue, and the engraver's initials 'HP' are visible in the lower right field. A continuous toothed border frames the entire design.
