New Zealand's bronze coinage underwent a quiet but deliberate shift after 1947, when the country dropped the phrase "ET IND:IMP:" from the royal titles following Indian independence. The 1949 halfpenny was among the first New Zealand coins issued under the revised legend acknowledging George VI simply as King without the Emperor of India title — a change mandated across all Commonwealth coinage by the Indian Independence Act of 1947.
Production continued through 1952 until George VI's death in February of that year ended the series.
