The "modified effigy" designation refers to a re-engraving of Bertram Mackennal's original George V portrait carried out in 1925, reducing the relief to address chronic striking problems that had plagued the bronze series since 1911. The Royal Mint's own records describe the earlier relief as impractical for high-volume production, causing excessive die wear and inconsistent definition across the coinage.

This three-year window — 1925 to 1927 — represents a transitional production phase before further adjustments were made to the effigy in subsequent years, making the modified type a distinct and often overlooked intermediate variety within an otherwise long-running reign.
