Additional information

South Africa's bronze coinage of this period was struck at the Pretoria Mint, which had opened in 1923 — the first mint on African soil to produce coins for general circulation. The halfpenny series of the late 1920s coincided with the formal passage of the Currency and Banking Act, which consolidated South Africa's monetary independence from direct British Treasury oversight. Mintages were modest throughout the run, with the 1931 date particularly low due to depressed economic conditions following the onset of the global financial crisis.
