South Africa's first domestic coinage — struck at the Pretoria Mint, which had only opened in 1923 — replaced British-made issues that had circulated since Union in 1910. The Pretoria facility was established partly out of postwar economic nationalism and partly because shipping bullion to London for striking had become an increasingly poor use of resources for a gold-producing nation. The 1923 date is the first year of the type, making early examples from this series the inaugural domestic bronze coinage of the Union.
