Ireland's copper coinage had been in chronic short supply for decades before this issue, with the void filled by a flood of private tokens that circulated by necessity rather than law. The 1805 series was struck at Soho Mint in Birmingham under Matthew Boulton's contract — the same operation that had already transformed British coinage with steam-powered presses. The gold-plated examples were not an official finish; they are proof or specimen strikes prepared for presentation purposes, the plating applied to give the impression of a more precious issue for collectors and dignitaries.
