The Isle of Man's coinage authority had lapsed by the early nineteenth century, leaving the island chronically short of small change. This 1811 halfpenny was struck not by any government mint but by a private contractor — almost certainly Matthew Boulton's Soho Mint in Birmingham, which held a near-monopoly on token and provincial copper coinage for British territories during this period. It circulates in numismatic literature under the Withers token reference precisely because its official status was legally ambiguous at issue.
The Soho Mint's characteristic edge treatment on Manx pieces from this run helps distinguish genuine strikes from contemporary counterfeits, which are known.
