The Isle of Man operated outside the jurisdiction of the Royal Mint's token suppression policies, which made it a convenient issuing authority during Britain's acute copper shortage of the Napoleonic period. This 1811 piece was struck by the Birmingham firm of Kempson and was part of a broader private token coinage filling the vacuum left by insufficient regal copper in circulation across the Irish Sea.
The KM#Tn4 designation — the "Tn" prefix confirming token status — reflects its ambiguous legal standing: accepted locally as currency but never formally authorized as such.
