Nova Scotia's chronic shortage of small change in the early nineteenth century was largely a consequence of British reluctance to supply colonial copper officially. Most circulating halfpennies in the province were merchant tokens or outright counterfeits. This piece, explicitly marked as genuine British copper, was issued in direct response to that problem — the legend itself was a commercial argument against the flood of debased imitations then passing at face value.
Breton 886 is among the more frequently encountered Nova Scotia coppers, suggesting reasonable original mintage and active circulation.
