Pobjoy Mint struck this Isle of Man issue in platinum as part of an aggressive bullion and collector strategy that made the island one of the most prolific sources of platinum coinage in the early 1980s — a period when platinum's per-ounce price briefly exceeded gold. The Isle of Man's crown dependency status gave it latitude to authorize denominations and compositions that no mainland British mint could produce, and Pobjoy exploited that flexibility thoroughly.
The Schön dual-listing reflects a documented die or finish variant between the 1980–1982 and 1983 strikings.
