The Isle of Man issued an unusually dense series of commemorative halfpenny pieces throughout the early 1980s, tying individual dates to specific occasions — a practice that muddied the distinction between circulation coinage and collectible issue. This piece marks World Food Day, established by the FAO in 1979 and first observed on 16 October 1980, the anniversary of the organization's founding in Quebec City in 1945. The Isle of Man Treasury was among the earliest and most prolific issuers to mint coins specifically dated to that observance.
