Berwick-on-Tweed operated as an English royal mint only intermittently, its activity directly tied to military and administrative control of the Scottish border. Edward II inherited the town — and its mint — from his father, who had seized it from Scotland in 1296. The facility served a practical need: paying garrisons and conducting local commerce in a zone that changed hands repeatedly throughout the Wars of Scottish Independence.
Scottish forces retook Berwick in 1318, almost certainly ending mint production before Edward's reign concluded in 1327. Any piece struck there carries an implicit date range narrower than the reign itself suggests.
