Obverse description Facing crowned bust of King Edward I occupies the central field, rendered in the characteristic bold, schematic style of late 13th- to early 14th-century English hammered coinage. The king's face is depicted frontally with a simple crown, and the bust is encircled by a beaded inner ring. The surrounding legend, in Gothic Latin characters, reads EDWAR R ANGL DNS hVB, identifying Edward as King of England and Lord of Ireland. The flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of hammered halfpence of this period.
