Beschrijving voorzijde Central view of the Old Quad of the University of Edinburgh, rendered in architectural relief with a prominent spire dividing the date 17·97 above. The legend EDINBURGH HALFPENNY arcs around the upper field, while NEW UNIVERSITY and the issuer's name PAYe BY ANDERSON LESLIE & Co appear below the building, with the engraver's credit WRIGHT DES in the lower exergual area. The composition is executed in a neo-classical style typical of late 18th-century Conder token design.

Beschrijving keerzijde A full-length figure of a gardener in 18th-century attire stands facing the viewer on a ground line, holding a spade in his right hand and an uprooted sapling in his left. A cultivated garden with trees and landscape features occupies the background. The scene is encircled by the Latin motto NEU SEGNES JACEANT TERRÆ * ETIAM MONTES CONSERERE JUVAT *, conveying an agrarian and improving sentiment consistent with Enlightenment-era commercial token iconography.
