Connecticut began issuing its own copper coinage in 1785 under a franchise system, with the General Assembly granting minting rights to private contractors rather than operating a state mint. The arrangement was notoriously loosely supervised, and the resulting output was chaotic — multiple contractors, overlapping die combinations, and wildly inconsistent quality across the run.
The facing-bust varieties of 1785 are among the earliest in the Connecticut series and occupy a transitional moment before the state's coinage settled into the more uniform draped bust designs of later years. Miller die classifications remain the standard reference for sorting this type.
