Obverse description Draped laureate bust of a Roman emperor facing left, imitating the style of a classical Roman portrait, occupying the central field. The peripheral legend reads CLAUDIUS ROMANUS, a deliberately fictitious inscription characteristic of British evasion tokens of the period, designed to avoid the legal prohibitions against counterfeiting regal coinage. The bust is rendered in a somewhat crude, low-relief style typical of clandestine token manufacture. Scattered green verdigris patination is visible across the copper field, consistent with the coin's age and alloy.
