Obverse description Crowned facing bust of King Alexander III within a beaded inner circle, the effigy depicted with a stylised crown bearing fleurs and a central cross finial. The king's face is rendered in a broad, flat medieval hammered style with visible ear and rudimentary drapery at the shoulders. A small heraldic cross or fleur-de-lis ornament appears to the left of the bust. The royal legend ALEXANDER DEI GRA encircles the effigy between the inner beaded circle and the coin's irregular outer edge.

Reverse description A long voided cross divides the reverse field into four quarters, each containing three pellets arranged in a triangular formation within a beaded inner circle. The cross terminates at the beaded circle, consistent with the standard second coinage design of Alexander III. The circumscription REX SCOTORVM appears between the beaded inner circle and the outer edge of the flan, completing the royal titulature from the obverse legend.
