The Bank of Montreal tokens of 1837 were issued during a period of acute monetary disorder in Lower Canada, where small change had effectively ceased to circulate reliably — hoarded, exported, or simply absent. Private banks stepped into the vacuum, producing copper tokens that functioned as de facto coinage with tacit government acceptance. The Bank of Montreal was among the most aggressive issuers, flooding the market across multiple die varieties now catalogued under the LC-8 series.
The specific die pairing designated LC-8D is distinguished within the broader 1837 Montreal token family by subtle differences in the arrangement of the bilingual denomination and the character of the milled edge. Struck in England, almost certainly by Boulton and Watt's successors at the Soho Mint in Birmingham.
